SYRACUSE, N.Y — (NCC NEWS) Walking is something that we do that comes as a second nature. What may not be second nature about walking is the benefits that a simple mile walk can have on your body. In 2005, Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus Ohio started a program known as “Walk With A Doc.” This was his way to get his patients moving, but to also get his patients talking about their health outside the four walls.
Upstate Medical University has joined the program, launching its “Walk With A Doc” chapter in June. UMatter Coordinator Elizabeth Fuertes- Binder says these walks help bring the community together to put health first.
“We’ve found that people have made friends, you know, people come with their dogs. With their families, with their friends their children, strollers, so it’s just a nice thing to do. It also shows community members that you know to be with a doctor outside the four walls of a doctors office,” says Fuertes-Binder.
These walks will be taking place every second Saturday of the month at Onondaga Lake Park.
