Today is Monday October 21st 2019 and this is your NCC Newsbrief. I’m Jake Fenner and these are the stories we’re working on today.
Syracuse University is celebrating their annual Remembrance Week Ceremony beginning today. The yearly event honors the 35 Syracuse students who lost their lives in the bombing of Pan-Am Flight 103 in 1988. The school’s remembrance scholars will honor their lives this week with a series of events and ceremonies. Today, a ribbon tying took place in the orange grove in front of Carnegie Library. Tomorrow, the scholars will sit in the empty seats display on the quad.
The City of Syracuse announced they’re expanding their sidewalk snow plowing service across the city. Syracuse’s public works department will be adding 18 miles of sidewalk to their plans – bringing the total up to 38 miles. The city will only clear the sidewalks once three inches of snow has fallen. The expanded service now covers areas along Erie Boulevard, Comstock Avenue, and Euclid Avenue.
And our neighbors to the North are having a general election and experts project a close finish. Canadian incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – the leader of the country’s Liberal Party – faces a tough challenge from Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer. Recent polls show a tight race with some even predicting the Conservatives will oust Trudeau. If he loses, Trudeau will become the first Canadian Prime Minister in 84 years to not be elected to a second term.
