If you’re in a rush, get caught up on the Central New York stories you need to know about with today’s NCC Newsbrief video.
Today’s stories include New York State raising the legal age for the sale of tobacco products, a Syracuse City School District report on teacher absenteeism, and a look a the final stretch of the season for Syracuse Orange football.
WELCOME TO YOUR N-C-C NEWSBRIEF. IT’S NOVEMBER ELEVENTH. A HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO YOU. I’M JAMES HILEPO, BRINGING YOU YOUR TOP STORIES.
FIRST UP,
NEW YORK STATE WILL OFFICIALLY RAISE THE LEGAL AGE FOR TOBACCO SALES FROM 18 TO 21 THIS WEEK.
WHILE MANY COUNTIES, INCLUDING ONONDAGA, HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE LEAD ON THIS CHANGE, GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCED PLANS EARLIER THIS YEAR TO APPLY THE LAW STATEWIDE. THOSE PLANS WILL FINALLY COME INTO EFFECT THIS WEDNESDAY.
A REPORT FROM THE SYRACUSE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUND A RISE IN TEACHER ABSENCES AT CITY SCHOOLS DURING THE TWENTY EIGHTEEN NINETEEN SCHOOL YEAR.
THE DISTRICT SAW AN AVERAGE OF 115 TEACHERS MISS SCHOOL EVERY SINGLE FRIDAY. THIS IS A NATIONAL PROBLEM WHICH NOT ONLY AFFECTS THE STUDENTS, BUT ALSO THE TAXPAYER, AS SYRACUSE SPENT FOUR POINT THREE MILLION DOLLARS ON SUBSTITUTES LAST YEAR.
ONTO S-U FOOTBALL NOW AND
THE ORANGE HAVE NO ROOM FOR ERROR ANYMORE. THEY NEED THREE STRAIGHT WINS TO CLOSE OUT THE SEASON AND MAKE A BOWL GAME. THE DO-OR-DIE STRETCH STARTS THIS SATURDAY AGAINST DUKE, AND DINO BABERS IS EXPECTING A TOUGH ONE AGAINST THE BLUE DEVILS.
BABERS: “FOR US TO BE ABLE TO MATCH WHAT THEY CAN DO OFFENSIVELY IS A TALL TASK… WE HAVE A VERY VERY BIG TASK. BUT IF WE CAN FIND A WAY, WE HAVE A CHANCE. WE’RE NOT LOOKING FOR ANYTHING THAN TRYING TO PLAY A LOT BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAVE BEEN AGAINST DUKE THIS WEEK.”
