SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – A volunteer at Webster Duck Pond, Chad Norton, said the new features at the pond help security and offer more recreational purposes. After someone vandalized the office a month ago, Norton and volunteers added new security features.
His friends set up the GoFundMe page which raised $16,000. He spent $3,000 on a new deck and benches.
For the new security features, Norton said he implemented cameras and will still add more. Monitors will also be added for them to watch the cameras. There will also be more lighting for them to see if anyone is trespassing .
Norton said he will also be adding an alarm system to the office that will monitored by a professional service. The alarms will sound off if anyone comes into the office. Another safety feature that has been at the pond for a while is a fence between the pond and the path.
For the new recreational project, Norton had a new outlook deck overlooking the pond built. There is a trail that leads to the deck that has several benches to sit on to look at the view. Another reason Norton had the deck built was for abled and disabled people to sit down and enjoy. Norton said he worked hard on the new deck.
“I felt amazed because I worked hard on that, that was my very first state grant that I ever did,” Norton said.
Overall, Norton believes the new security and safety features along with new outlook deck will help the pond.
