SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Tuesday is voting day for the New York State Primary. Central New Yorkers are following the race for the 22nd and the 24th Congressional District seats, and the 126th Assembly District.
The polls were not as busy this year due to the coronavirus. Earlier this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York residents had the option of voting through absentee ballots until June 23.
Mijah Young, a voter in Onondaga County, said that although he received an absentee ballot by mail, he felt the need to vote in-person.
“With everything that’s going on in America right now, it’s definitely for people to come out to vote…especially minorities … especially black people,” Young said.
This is Young’s second time voting and he says that when he was younger he didn’t think that voting was important.
“It took me a few years to get it in my mind the thought that how important it was to vote but once I got of age and mature I thought this something I need to do as an African American male,” Young said.
With the recent protests surrounding the death of George Floyd, Young believes that all people of color should go to the polls and exercise their right to vote.
“Anytime you come out and vote you should have it on your heart that you are making a change … having things to be the way you need them to be and it’s not going to happen unless you vote,” Young said.
All polls will be open until 9:00 p.m. and all absentee ballots must be postmarked with today’s date in order to be counted.
