Caleb Nice: I’m Caleb Nice reporting for N-C-C News. Here are the stories making news today, April 19th.
While Russia continues to attack Ukraine overseas, one local Ukrainian is finding a way to support her home country. Syracuse resident but Ukraine native, Hanna Brobka (BRO-vkah), has started her own cooking business, Hanna Bee Bakes.
When the war began in her homeland, she said…
Brobka: I just like ‘alright well for the rest of this month, 20-percent of my proceeds are are just gonna get sent to Ukraine.
Nice: Established in 20-20, her bakery for now is just out of her own kitchen. But, in an effort to expand, Brobka (BRO-vkah) hopes to sell her baked goods at a farmers market next month.
And she says that for the time being, she’ll continue to give a share of Hanna Bee Bakes’ sales to her home country.
Wescott Theater here in Syracuse is finally seeing a sense of normalcy. Hannah Kushner, an intern for the theater, believes they might make it out okay.
Kushner: I think it is a smaller venue so it’s kind of like smaller capacity which could make things easier for COVID because less people.
Nice: Lately, the theater had a packed schedule of live events where masks have been optional. Last week, a Syracuse University music showcase brought a great crowd.
Kushner: They’ve been having really good turnouts, I mean Bloomfest had a really good turnout which was like more than we expected which was good.
Nice: The theater plans to have about 12 more events until the end of May.
Syracuse University will receive 20-million dollars from the 20-23 New York State budget for Carrier Dome renovations.
The Carrier Dome will be swapping the classic metal bleachers for new plastic stadium seats. Syracuse University’s student-run fan organization, Otto’s Army, says this might not be the best idea. Otto’s Army has helped S-U break the national record for largest student section at a regular season N-C-double-A men’s basketball game, but Otto’s Army senior adviser Jonathan Danilich says SU will probably never break that record will again…
Danilich: The records that we broke this year will probably never be broken again because of the fact that those seats are going to drastically, not drastically, but they will reduce the capacity”>
Nice: Renovations will take place during summer 20-23.
