JAMES CORRIGAN: This is your NCC news update on this Tuesday, July 21 2020. I’m James Corrigan, and here’s what’s happening.
The Surgeon General is pleading with the American people to wear their masks. Jerome Adams said in an interview yesterday that the Trump administration’s new efforts to promote mask wearing does not restrict civil liberties.
ADAMS: “I’m begging you please understand we are not trying to take away your freedoms when were saying wear a face covering.”
CORRIGAN: This comes after an interview last week when Adams supported President Trump’s opposition to a nationwide mask mandate.
Local bar owners continue to wrap their heads around the new rule announced last week by governor Cuomo that states customers cannot purchase drinks without also purchasing food. The measure is meant to be a means of keeping crowds down, but the owner of Baldwinsville’s Potter’s Pub Mike Tanzella says neither he or any of the state’s bar owners were consulted.
TANZELLA: “They weren’t really talking to the everyday bar business restaurant owner…what they go through.”
CORRIGAN: New York City’s reopening reached phase four yesterday, but without indoor restaurants and bars.
The deadline for the state’s public schools to choose one of three reopening plan is just ten days away, but teachers say they need certain guidelines in place before they can be comfortable coming back. New York United Teachers Labor Relations Specialist, Brad Crooks.
CROOKS: “We’re pushing for masks to be worn, especially when you can’t social distance. And the other concern is transportation trying to get the kids on the bus safely.”
CORRIGAN: Today, mostly sunny, high of 83, going down to 66 tonight.
