The state of New York forced school budget votes to take place via mail in ballot. In Syracuse, voter turnout spiked between three- and eight-times more than a normal year. Not only did votes go up in Syracuse, but around the state and in other states because voters did not have to go to a polling place to cast their vote.
Syracuse University has put forth 127 safety guidelines to protect from a rise in coronavirus cases when school resumes on-campus this fall. Among these are the semester operating in an accelerated format and ending before Thanksgiving Break to avoid students returning to campus. The school will also have a facility to house students who are suspected of carrying the virus.
As the city of Syracuse continues to reopen through the phases laid out by Governor Andrew Cuomo, stores in the area are feeling a boost. Scholars and Champs is a retail store in downtown Syracuse, and owner Bert Aufsesser says he is still taking precautions even though the store is open again.
Bert Aufsesser: We’re steaming everything to kind of disinfect it. Probably sterilizing the clothes that way is the biggest thing that I’ve been doing.”)
KD: Across the country, regions are entering phases of reopening according to their state’s guidelines. In California’s Monterey Bay, tourism is everything. According to statistics from SeeMonterey.com, 4.5 million people visited the area last year. Today, the coastal California city is starting to buzz again with tourists. Erin Preston and Pam Elliot are business owners in Monterey.
Erin Preston: It’s exciting. It’s definitely exciting.
Pam Elliot: Quite a bit of traffic on the street sort of surprised me.
KD: Doordash is making some changes to help businesses. They will now deliver beauty products along with their traditional food service. In a partnership with CVS Pharmacy, the delivery service hopes this will help promote social distancing by keeping people out of stores.
The Western and Southern Open is moving from Ohio to NYC because of coronavirus concerns. The annual tennis tournament is usually a boost for the Cincinnati economy, but fans are also going to miss out.
Hannah Stowe: “Many people from different places will tell us that it’s the best tournament that they’ve been to and they’ll travel from all over the world because they think that they can get the closest to tennis players.”
KD: We’re also covering the latest news and sports, as well as the hot weather in central New York this week. Check back on the NCC News website for more updates.
