Good afternoon. I’m Ian Toner. This is the NCC News Podcast. It’s Thursday, June eighteenth and here’s what NCC News is reporting on today.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued an executive order recognizing Juneteenth, coming up tomorrow, as a holiday for New York State employees. Juneteenth commemorates June nineteenth, eighteen sixty five, when news of the abolition of slavery came to Texas more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Governor Cuomo’s office says he will advance legislation to make Juneteenth an official state holiday next year.
People in New York can now record police activity and maintain custody of that recording under a new law signed by Governor Cuomo. N-C-C’s Alex Peebles spoke with civil rights attorney Alan Rosenthal.
(“…the role that each piece of legislation plays is an important one.”)
The law will go into effect next month.
And as N-C-C’s Michelle Knezovic reports, small businesses around upstate New York have been forced to change their operating procedures during the pandemic. Brittany Dietz moved her spin classes from a studio to a Facebook group and expects many lifestyle changes to endure beyond the pandemic.
Dietz’s group now sports thousands of members, and she plans to continue virtual classes after the pandemic ends.
For a sneak peek at sports, here’s NCC’s Maria Trivelpiece.
