I’m Kayla Burton reporting for N-C-C News. Here are the stories making news today, May 28.Last week the Syracuse Common Council voted on approving Verizon’s plan to build 5G cell towers. Despite the controversial 5-3 outcome of the votes, the results are in, giving Verizon the “OK” to build these towers throughout the city. Councilor Joe Driscoll says this plan may benefit the future of Syracuse.

(Joe Driscoll)
“I’m also very concerned about poverty in this city and this is an economic development plan that really put us at the forefront of the incoming technological revolution.”

The 5G cell towers are scheduled to be built this summer, making Syracuse one of the only cities in the country with full 5G capabilities. During this time of year we typically see both kids and adults hitting the beaches. Well unlike the previous summers, this may not be the case due to the lack of lifeguards. Because of this shortage, the town of Cicero decided to close all of its beaches around Oneida. Cicero’s Recreation Program Director Linda Adam wants people to know, they tried their best.

(Linda Adams)
“We advertised on social media indeed, Craig’s list we have numerous community contacts athletic directors swim coaches and we reached out to all of those people.”

Representatives from Parks and Recreation in Cicero say they are working to make sure they have enough lifeguards next year so this doesn’t become a problem again.

We’ve seen the rainfall before, especially in this city, but this time may be one for the books. Regulators say Lake may exceed record water levels set two years ago. And that’s not the only record that may break. NCC’s Jonathan LaRowe tells us Central New York could be breaking the record for the wettest month as well.

(Jonathan LaRowe)
“It’s been raining for a lot of the day and it should continue for the rest of this week. Now Syracuse is already the fourth wettest May on record, and if it continues to rain like this for the rest of this week, it could set the record for the wettest May in history.”

All of you Syracuse folks may want to grab your rain boots and umbrellas for the rest of this week., For NCC News, I’m Kayla Burton reporting. You can find full stories on our website, Nccnews.online.com.
