Ben Deitrick: I’m Ben Deitrick reporting for N-C-C News. Here are the stories making news today, November 29.
Representative for Syracuse’s congressional district John Katko is officially stepping down. Katko gave his farewell speech at the K-G Tan Auditorium at Syracuse University last night. Katko believes it is essential to have different viewpoints in order for the nation to move forward in the best way possible.
John Katko: People like different bands. People like different restaurants. You can have different political views, it’s okay. And people in this country have to get back to understanding that that’s okay.
Ben Deitrick: Once he retires, Katko wants to spend more time with his family.
U-S soccer support group known as the American Outlaws will be holding watch parties later today for the U-S men’s soccer team’s world cup match versus Iran. President of the Syracuse chapter Steve Haller says these crowds are continuing to grow, and that interest in soccer keeps expanding in Central New York.
Steve Haller: If you go down to any random bar on a Saturday you’ll see people watching premier league games or go in the evening you’ll see MLS matches on.
Ben Deitrick: The C-D-C reports that 40-million children are not vaccinated against measles, leading to a concern about the disease worldwide. However, Onondaga County Medical Director Doctor James Alexander says locally, we should be safe.
James Alexander: You know, assuming that we have 98 to 99 percent vaccine coverage for measles. That meets the requirements for us to say that we have herd immunity.
Ben Deitrick: Today will be partly cloudy with a high of 45 degrees and a 20-percent chance of freezing rain.
