BR: Good afternoon. For N-C-C News, I’m Brandon Ross.

If you’re feeling lucky today, Vernon Downs and New York’s 12 other private casinos can open for the first time since March. The state is requiring casinos to have enhanced filtration systems and cut their max capacity to 25 percent to re-open. Most of them will open today. Empire Raceway downstate is reopening the 21st and others will wait a bit longer.

Just a short way down I-81, Cornell University’s in-person classes could soon be in jeopardy. 31 students living on-campus have tested positive for COVID in less than a week. Governor Andrew Cuomo said before the year started that schools could be forced to close if that number reaches 100. Yesterday, he doubled down.

AC: “And if they go over 100, then the school can be closed down to do remote learning. So who gets helped? But the students who want to socialize and party, now you’re going to do remote learning. It’s not going to be helpful to the school administration, but it is going to happen.”

BR: It already has happened in New York. SUNY Oneonta closed last week due to an outbreak that has reached 600 cases.

And if you’re in need of food, a giveaway is happening at the state fairgrounds today. Dairy farmers collaborated with Renzi Food Service to put up hundreds of boxes of meat, dairy products and produce. Entering the grounds through gate 7 will give you access to the drive. Trunks will be filled as long as supplies last.
