Doug Spangenberg has only been in the hair cutting business for four years, but his business is already in need of expansion. “We have like ten pounds of sh** in a five pound bag in here. We are literally stacking people on top of people. That’s been our achilles heel,” Spangenberg said. The service at Westcott Barber is almost universally loved, evidenced by a 4.6 star rating on Google Reviews, but some walk-in customers complain of excessive wait times.
That’s why Spangenberg is moving his shop by early December. The new place will only be a two and a half minute walk away from the original shop. It will share an entrance with a lunch dive known for Cuban Sandwiches, Las Delicas.
The extra space is the main reason for the move, but troubles with neighbors also played in. The current Westcott Barber shares parking with apartment residents. Spangenberg said he got punched in the face by a neighbor in an altercation over parking.
The new location is over 1,000 square feet, versus the 400 square feet the company currently operates in, according to Spangenberg. New barbers will be hired. A wash station and improved waiting area are also upgrades to the new location. Customers are loyal to Westcott Barber for its colorful personalities. For Spangenberg, transferring over the vibes are a top priority.
“Not to pump my own tire but I think my personality kind of shines through here. I really like music so we have music stuff on the wall. The rest of the barbers are personalities in their own right. But I think a vibe of a shop is its people.”
