What the Flock is Going on in Central New York? What the Flock is Going on in Central New York

SYDNEY STAPLES: What started as a response to a Facebook post has now turned into a pink bird phenomenon. Pretty Princesses Central New York Chief Executive Officer Kym Servello-Garden created a fundraiser so that no little girl goes without a party dress on their birthday. Little did she know how much of a difference she’d be making.

KYM SERVELLO-GARDEN: In the beginning, I didn’t think it would mean as much, and you see the smiles on the kids’ faces, it just means we are doing a little something that means a lot to them.

STAPLES: The fundraiser has helped more girls than she could have imagined.

SERVELLO-GARDEN: I just thought, how many other little girls need party dresses? So I recruited a couple friends and figured we’d give away a few dresses, and we’ve given away over 1500.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — When pulling into your driveway, be on the lookout for pink birds staked into the ground.

People are paying to place plastic flamingos in other’s front yards as part of a Party Princesses Central New York fundraiser. Chief Executive Officer Kym Servello-Garden created this fundraiser so that no little girl has to go a birthday without a party dress.

Servello-Garden got the idea when she came across a mom’s Facebook post in a free help group. This mom was looking for a birthday dress for a young girl. By the time Servello-Garden got the dress, someone else had already sent the girl one.

“I just thought, how many other little girls need party dresses?” Servello-Garden said.

What started as her response to a Facebook post, is now a pink bird phenomenon.

During the pandemic, Servello-Garden needed a way to raise money from a distance, thus the creation of the “You’ve Been Flocked” initiative. People could donate $25 to the charity to place flamingos in their neighbors’ yards, while safely abiding to social distancing guidelines.

Each donation goes toward providing free clothes and accessories, such as dresses, shoes, tiaras and other kinds of jewelry.

The charity has now given away over 1,500 dresses to girls in need from people’s donations.

So if you see flamingos in your front yard, be sure to pay it forward and choose your flocking victim; not only will you make your neighbors laugh, but you will make little girls smile from your small contribution.
