Winter Weather Advisory for Onondaga County Winter Weather Advisory for Onondaga County

Winter weather struck Syracuse on Wednesday causing the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory for central New York. Onondaga County was one of the areas affected and the advisory was put in place until 7 p.m Wednesday. National Weather Service experts predicted 1 to 3 inches of snow could pile up across the region and wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph.

These conditions could lead to slippery roads and poor visibility and the National Weather Service placed the advisory to alert travelers of the poor conditions.

The warning said that “areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.”

Syracuse resident Genevieve Dominiak said she looks out for weather advisories or alerts but will often use her judgement before hitting the roads.

“I mainly look outside and see how the roads are and I judge it for myself, but I pay attention to the advisories,” said Dominiak. “It looks really pretty back here with all the trees and everything but when you have to drive its annoying.”

Noah Eagle, the sports director at the NPR affiliated Syracuse radio station WAER, said he had to rearrange his travel plans because of the weather advisory. He was covering the Syracuse Men’s basketball game in Columbus, OH Wednesday night.

“Normally we like to book these flights for games day-of, but I was looking ahead at the weather advisory and I saw that was just not going to be the case. So, I decided to move up the flight a day ahead of time instead of going day-of and that worked out beautifully because our flight, a day ahead of time, got delayed massively,” said Eagle. “Everything got moved back because of the weather, and if I didn’t move it a day ahead of time, we would have completely missed the game.”

Other counties that were affected by the advisory include Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, and Oneida county. The National Weather Service said snow is expected throughout the rest of the week and residents can look on their website for updates and new alerts.
