PATRICIA DUONG: ALL ABOARD! CALLING ALL TRAIN ENTHUSIASTS, THIS NOVEMBER FOURTH AND FIFTH MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE EXPOSITION CENTER AT THE FAIRGROUNDS FOR AN ENCHANTING EXPERIENCE IN THE WINTER WONDERLAND TRAIN AREA WHERE THE VIBRANT SUMMER LANDSCAPES ARE ON THE VERGE OF TRANSFORMING INTO A MAGICAL WINTER WONDERLAND. YOU MIGHT RUN INTO DONNA THOMAS, WHO SHARES HER LOVE OF TRAINS WITH HER SON MICHAEL. WITH MICHAEL ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM, DONNA WAS WORRIED ON HOW ACCEPTING THE O-GAUGE GROUP WOULD BE.

DONNA THOMAS: I WAS A LITTLE HESITANT ABOUT JOINING THIS CHAPTER BECAUSE AUTISTIC KIDS AREN’T ALWAYS WELCOMED AND THERE ARE EXPECTATIONS. I COULDN’T HAVE BEEN FARTHER OFF IN MY AFFAIRS BECAUSE THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN SO WELCOMING.

PATRICIA DUONG VO: THE MODEL TRAIN COMMUNITY HAS GIVEN MICHAEL A PLACE TO BE HIMSELF WITHOUT ANY JUDGMENT. MICHAEL ORIGINALLY GOT INTO TRAINS BECAUSE OF HIS LATE UNCLE’S PASSION FOR LOCOMOTIVES.

MICHAEL R. THOMAS: YES, MY LATE UNCLE RICHARD GATES GOT ME INTO TRAINS SPECIFICALLY THE O-GAUGE GROUP.

PATRICIA DUONG: SYRACUSE IS NO STRANGER TO HISTORY AND THESE MODEL TRAINS DEPICT JUST THAT. THEY’RE SOMETHING THAT BRINGS FAMILY TOGETHER. IT’S NOT JUST TOYS, IT’S A LIFE-LONG HOBBY.

DONNA THOMAS: YOU SEE GRANDPARENTS WITH YOUNG KIDS AND THEIR GRANDFATHERS ARE POINTING OUT THINGS ON LAYOUTS OR I WORKED AT THIS RAILROAD OR WHATEVER OR I DROVE ON THIS KIND OF TRAIN OR I TRAVELED. AND YOU KNOW, THE LITTLE KIDS ARE LIKE OH WOW.

PATRICIA DUONG VO:YOUNG AND OLD ARE INVITED TO SPEND A FEW DAYS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRACKS AS OLDER GENERATIONS SHARE THEIR JOY OF TRAINS WITH YOUNGER GENERATIONS. THE FAIR EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY, AND HOPE THAT YOUNGER FOLKS WILL SEE THE MAGIC THAT THEY DO, WHEN THAT TRAIN COMES ACROSS THE RAILWAYS. SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)Train enthusiasts of all ages are gearing up for a heartwarming journey into the enchanting world of model trains this Nov. 4 and 5 at the Exposition Center, located at the Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The event promises to transport visitors from vibrant summer landscapes into a magical winter wonderland.

One heartwarming story from this year’s event is the remarkable experience of Donna Thomas and her son, Michael. Donna Thomas, a member of the O-Gauge CNY Chapter, had reservations about joining the group due to her son Michael being on the autism spectrum. She worried about how accepting the O-Gauge community would be. However, her concerns were quickly dispelled as she found the group to be incredibly welcoming and supportive.

“I was a little hesitant about joining this chapter because autistic kids aren’t always welcomed, and there are expectations,” Donna Thomas shared. “I couldn’t have been farther off in my affairs because this is an incredible group of people who have been so welcoming.”

For Michael, the model train community has become a place where he can be himself without judgment. His passion for trains was ignited by his late uncle’s love for locomotives.

“Yes, my late uncle Richard Gates got me into trains, specifically the O-Gauge group,” said Michael R. Thomas.

Syracuse has a rich history, and these model trains reflect just that. They are more than just toys; they represent a lifelong hobby that brings families together.

“You see grandparents with young kids, and their grandfathers are pointing out things on layouts or sharing stories about their experiences with trains,” Donna Thomas explained. “And you know, the little kids are like, ‘Oh wow.'”

The event serves as a bridge between generations, where both young and old can come together to share in the joy of trains. The Winter Wonderland Train Area at the Exposition Center promises an unforgettable experience, inviting families to embrace the timeless fascination with model trains. It’s not merely a hobby; it’s a shared love that transcends generations and fosters acceptance for all.

As visitors explore the intricate layouts and marvel at the miniature worlds created with meticulous detail, it becomes clear that these model trains are more than just pieces of metal on tracks. They are a testament to the enduring bonds between parents, children, and their shared passions.

Amid the bustling fairgrounds and the magical world of trains, the Thomas family’s story is a reminder of the powerful connections that can be forged within the most unexpected places. It’s a tale of acceptance, love, and the unifying force of a shared hobby.

What makes this event even more special is that the fair organizers are committed to creating an inclusive environment, where everyone can feel the magic that model trains bring. This welcoming atmosphere allows younger generations to witness the beauty and camaraderie that older generations have cherished for years.
