SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — In Elbridge, a fishing hatchery opened their doors or in this case their own pond, in hopes to brighten people’s days.
For Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery, they are welcoming elders, veterans and groups of special needs people. They are doing so because they believe that nature brings a certain sense of calmness and peace.
The staff members of Carpenter’s stand side by side with customers who come to the pond, that way if anyone needs help they are there to assist.
Sage Crawford has been working at the Hatchery for 18 months and he said the highlight of the job is still watching people catch a fish for the first time.
“Their eyes light up when they feel a tug on the line and you can sense a feeling of pride they have for this accomplishment,” said Crawford.
A lot of special needs people young or old have never been given the opportunity to fish before and Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery is working hard against the stigma surrounding that activity.
The program costs $5 per person and is running every Wednesday and Friday until August 5.
