SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Elementary and middle schools across Central New York are adjusting instruction plans this week to account for the extreme heat wave.
The Syracuse City School District will dismiss students early on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to accommodate for a lack of air conditioning in the buildings.
Monday will be a regular school day as planned and students already have Wednesday off for the Juneteenth holiday.
Only Tuesday and Thursday will be half-days for the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, while the Central Square School District already announced half-days for the remainder of the week.
SCSD Director of Media Amanda Hull said the students well being is the primary focus.
“In such a hot environment, safety is our number one priority,” Hull said. “We know that having them there during that peak level of temperature wouldn’t mesh well with trying to get them to learn.”
High schools across Central New York are keeping classes scheduled as planned. Regents Exams will be administered later this month.
A heat advisory remains in effect for Central New York from noon Tuesday to 8 p.m. Thursday.
