SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — A presidential candidate is encouraging a sorority.
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at Syracuse University are excited about Kamala Harris running for president.
Minetsa Cotto Ortiz, a member of the Illustrious Iota Upsilon Chapter at Syracuse University, was initiated in the spring of 2023. Ortiz, who became the Connection and Social Action Chair, wants to ensure that people in the Syracuse community understand the importance of voting.
“Looking toward the upcoming election, our organization has placed a huge emphasis on voter registration and voter education. I foresee our chapter continuing these efforts leading up to the election in November and beyond,” said Ortiz.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was founded on four major pillars: scholarship, leadership, civic engagement, and public service. Ortiz believes Harris exemplifies these pillars and is committed to service to all mankind. She aspires to follow in those footsteps in Syracuse to make an impact.
Ortiz believes Syracuse is an engaged community that has struggled with systemic disparities, but that doesn’t have to be their reality—it starts with us, the next generation.
She is excited to partner with other Divine Nine organizations at Syracuse to host events this fall aimed at educating the next generation about the importance of voting.
