Syracuse N.Y. (NCC News) – Whether it be Carrier or JMA Wireless before it, the Dome is nationally known as the iconic home of the Syracuse University football, basketball, and lacrosse teams. It has also become one of the premier entertainment hubs in upstate New York, and a completely unique stadium as far as college campuses go. Boasting a capacity that stretches towards 43,000 for football games, the massive arena has an equally massive show to promote this spring – Billy Joel and Sting will be in Syracuse on Friday, April 11th.
The two rock and roll icons will share the stage in a one-night-only performance, each performing hits from their illustrious careers. Billy Joel is as much as a Dome regular as one can be – this will be a record eighth show in the arena for the piano man. During his last appearance in Syracuse in 2015, Joel’s jersey was hung up in the rafters of the Dome. This is Sting’s first solo appearance at the venue, as he was here twice as a member of the Police in 1982 and 1984.
“We’re excited to have both Billy Joel and Sting back at the JMA Dome,” Pete Sala commented after the announcement. Sala, the Vice President and Chief Campus Facilities Officer at Syracuse, also serves as the Managing Director of the JMA Wireless Dome. “Both have been here before and have helped draw some of our biggest audiences to date. With this show, Billy will be extending his record number of Dome performances to eight over a nearly 25-year period. We’re grateful to again work with Live Nation on another big concert event and can’t wait to host it. It’ll be a great show.”
Sala was in attendance on Thursday morning when the concert was announced to media, with special guest and former Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson there to assist in the special presentation. There was much ado as a part of the announcement, but that’s not because this is a rare occasion for the Dome. Sala wasn’t exaggerating when he said anotherĀ big concert event. In just the past two years, the Dome hosted Paul McCartney, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Strokes, Bruce Springsteen, and Elton John. P!nk and Metallica are also scheduled to appear in Syracuse this year, with the former’s concert less than a week away on Sunday, October 6th.
“Billy Joel and Sting, together for one-night-only in Syracuse, will be an incredible night of live music and a show that will bring together fans from across the region to celebrate these two legendary performers,” said Jim Koplik, the President of Live Nation Upstate New York/Connecticut.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 4th at 9 AM for what is expected to be another sellout at the JMA Wireless Dome.
