Attempts to Start Businesses Spike in Onondaga

SBD OCC Representative: People are becoming more confident I think, and a lot of people lost their jobs.

Nick Merriam: That’s the voice of a representative from the small business development center at Onondaga Community College. They’ve been set up on the Onondaga Government website to help people looking to start new businesses find a way to file for DBA forms. What is a DBA form? Well it’s a way to get a trade name for your new business and we’ve seen a surge in these recently in the city of Syracuse and in the county itself. The question is about consumer attitude. Some businesses are doing better as the vaccines churn out.

SBD OCC Rep: I know that different businesses are trying to capitalize on people coming back out of their houses.

Merriam: But not all consumers in Onondaga county feel we’re approaching an open economy.

Dillon Wall: I don’t think so. I think it’s probably about the same at this point.

Merriam: but in Downtown Syracuse there were some people out and about, and this Syracuse student seemed to confirm why.

Wall: But if it’s something that business can provide that another service can’t.. then yeah I’ll probably check them out and buy from them.

Merriam: I’m out here on Marshall street where it is a little bit busier than downtown just because probably of the populated student area that is right next to here mostly because of food and retail areas like Acropolis Pizza and Bleu Monkey right behind me.

Merriam: this makes sense of most of the new places that are attempting to open. About a third of the new business filings were for food and retail places. They seem to be two of the leading businesses in a slow build back to a normal economy, and reason for optimism for future spikes in businesses starting…

Wall: I think this is just the first in a series of many spikes over the next few months.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – The Onondaga County Clerk’s Office reported that 44 new businesses were filed for in the county over the past week, according to Syracuse.com. Seventeen of these businesses were filed for in Syracuse. This is a major jump in pursuit for new jobs. This also comes in a week where only two small businesses failed.

It’s no secret that the coronavirus pandemic has put stress on local businesses financially. Consumers are less likely to leave their homes due to the pandemic, and often instead order products online or through delivery.

So what’s changed exactly that has made opening businesses seem more appealing? Well for one, a lot of people lost jobs during the pandemic. This may be the easiest way for those people to become employed again. But there’s also the New York vaccination roll out which has increased both vendor and consumer confidence.

As Syracuse student Dillon Wall put it, consumer confidence may not be as high as it was pre-pandemic, but special cases may be more likely to convince consumers to leave their homes.

“If it’s something that business can provide that another service can’t.” Wall said, “Then yeah, I’ll probably check them out and buy from them.
