SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – National Voter Registration Day reached #2 on X’s, the platform formerly known as Twitter, trending list this past Tuesday, September 19. 2020 U.S. Census data finds that as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Because of this, organizations like The Lincoln Project and political figures like Michelle Obama took to social media to urge Americans to ensure that they are registered to vote by checking their registration status.
Tuesday was also International Talk Like a Pirate Day. #TalkLikeAPirate topped out at #13 on X’s trending list, as users across the platform celebrated the occasion. International Talk Like a Pirate Day came to exist in 1995 when John Baur and Mark Summers of Albany, Oregon, were playing a game of racquetball. Amidst a frustrated moment, Summers began to speak like a pirate. The two enjoyed speaking like pirates so much that they thought there should be a day dedicated to it. Baur and Summers celebrated the holiday among friends until 2002, when Miami Herald humor columnist David Berry caught wind of the holiday and wrote about it. From that moment on, the holiday has gained popularity, and is celebrated every September 19.
