A One-Stop Shop To Recycle Cans And Plastic Bottles A One-Stop-Shop To Recycle Your Cans

SOLVAY,  N.Y.  (NCC News) —President Joe Biden proclaims today to be America Recycles Day.

To help manage waste in Onondaga County, a local business is a one-stop-shop for people to drop off their used cans and bottles.

“When it comes to me, it gets recycled the right way,” the owner of Papa Cans Bottle Return Kim Guerin said.

Guerin said residents don’t need to sit their blue recycling bins outside of their homes anymore.

“So they can just bag everything up and bring it to me,” Guerin said. “I’ll sort it up at the counter, pay them for what’s good and recycle the rest.”

Guerin said in exchange for a can or bottle, you get 5 cents. She said although that may seem like a little, the change will add up.

Guerin said recycling is for a good cause.

She said plastic gets recycled into new water bottles, and parts of the cans are used to create canes for the elderly.

Guerin said they keep their system simple if there is a new brand of soda or water.

“We create a new spot for it and figure out what it goes with and then bag it up,” she said.

Guerin said there are guidelines her business follows.

She said if a can is flat; she can not take it.

Guerin said she encourages all to recycle to help manage waste in the environment.

Syracuse Resident Lauren Mackey said she recycles often.

“Whenever there is recycling, I’ll throw it in there just because I think it’s important for everybody to do their part to take care of the environment,” Mackey said. “And if it’s right there in front of you why not?”

If you are looking to drop off your cans and bottles, Guerin said her waste management site is located on 2359 Milton Ave.

Guerin said Papa Cans Bottle Return will be hosting a Christmas giveaway this holiday season.
