Giulia Milana loves playing video games. In the past year, she found a passion for the game Fortnite and began using a website called twitch, which allows gamers to stream their gameplay while others watch, interact, and donate to them. When her family started a medical foundation, she wanted to get involved.

“My family started this thing called Man Cave Health after my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago. It is a place where men can get tested, treated, and educated about prostate cancer.”

Giulia realized that the better she played, and the more engaged her fans were, the more they donated. This fan for example, offered to donate 100 dollars to her stream if she got a kill. That’s when she had the idea to raise money for the foundation.

“I wanted to find my own way to give back. So I did a 12 hour charity stream, where my goal was 25 hundred dollars. My original goal was like 500 dollars, but my dad said ‘You need to up it, I feel like you can do more’ and I was like ‘I think you’re crazy but okay!'”

Just like she shocked herself at her success in the game in this clip, Giulia shocked herself with the success of her charity stream and raised far more than she anticipated in a much shorter time frame.

“I hit my goal in like less than two hours. And I was like ‘Are you freaking kidding me?’, this was 2 hours into my 12 hour stream. I ended up raising over 6 thousand dollars. My dad was really proud of me, I was really proud of myself and my fans, and my community really came together which was awesome.”

Because of her fan’s donations, Giulia promised them she would stream for 24 hours straight, and she did just that over the weekend.

As it turns out, sometimes strangers on the internet aren’t so bad after all. For NCC News, I’m Ryan Tabb.
