Gyms Could Be Part of Phase Three Reopenings Gyms Could Be Part of Phase Three Reopenings

County Executive Ryan McMahon Wants Them to be Included

MCMAHON: There’s aspects of a gym of a gym operation that what we’re suggesting, is can you take those aspects, and have them in phase 3?

Maria Trivelpiece: For one local gym owner, this news comes after months of frustration.

Ellen Goldberg: We created a proposal like months ago to be included in phase 2, which I’d sent to the state, to the county executive, the office of econmic development, like every place where they told you to submit a proposal, there was like no formal process for that, no review process.

Maria Trivelpiece: But with McMahon’s announcement, she is hopeful.

Ellen Goldberg: I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to push through this week and get an answer and open on Monday for at least personal training.

Maria Trivelpiece: But pumping the iron like customers did before the corona virus, won’t be possible. Just like the other businesses that have re-opened, there will be some changes. And, you might even have to wear a mask.

Ellen Goldberg: Typically we have twenty people per class, we’re proposing eight people per class. We have an eight by eight foot grid with like walking lanes between each grid. Each grid will be equipped for the individual athlete, no sharing of equipment. There’s sanitiation of equipment between. Only one class in the gym at a time. You know you have to wait outside the gym until we turn a sign over on the door that says your class can now enter. Everyone gets their temperature checked when you come in, you must wash your hands when you come in.

Maria Trivelpiece: Even though it will look different, Goldberg says she thinks people will still come.

Ellen Goldberg: It’s time to get back to the gym and yeah just let everyone reconnect as a community. I feel like the light at the end of the tunnel is approaching.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – As Onondaga County continues to move through reopening phases, little guidance has been given on where gyms and fitness facilities fall under. However, yesterday, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced that he could see them possibly falling under the guidelines of Phase Three.

“There’s aspects of a gym of a gym operation that what we’re suggesting, is can you take those aspects, and have them in Phase Three,” McMahon said.

One local gym in Syracuse was hoping that they would be allowed to open in Phase Two.

“I’ve been filling out proposals for months,” said Ellen Goldberg, owner of CrossFit Syracuse. “But, I wouldn’t hear back.”

Goldberg said that she and her employees have been doing their best to keep their business going virtually. “We do virtual personal training and try to have different events,” she said.

But, she also knows that she can’t do this forever, and she and her staff need to get back in the gym.

“A big part of what we do is based on community and being together,” she said.

McMahon is still pushing for the facilities to be a part of Phase Three so that people like Goldberg and her staff can get back to making a living and paying rent.
