How a Local Flower Shop Prepares for Valentines Day How a Local Flower Shop Prepares for Valentines Day

“This is the Super Bowl of our year it is the largest day,” says Manager Teresa Plaza of Saint Agnes Flower Shop in Syracuse.

Plaza has worked at the shop for 30 years and says the best part of Valentine’s Day preperations is the family warmth in the store. “We get to work with our families. A lot of people bring their families in, I bring my girls in. Somebody brings their mom in, the bosses mom comes in,” said Plaza.

Preparing for a day of Super Bowl proportions for florists means that a small shop like Saint Agnes needs all hands on deck. Flowers have to be ordered in advance and preparation takes long days and late nights.

“Really crazy. I mean last night we were here very late. tonight we’ll probably be here till midnight at least,” says designer Kelly MacLachlan.

Even though MacLachlan has been around flowers her entire life she has never worked a flower shop during Valentine’s Day. So far, she’s notices a trend with her customers.

“What I noticed is … guys have really lame choices for flowers. They all think red roses are like it,” says MacLachlan.

But the family owned shop that has had its doors open for 100 years is fully prepared for the holiday of love. They’ve been preparing for months, and their purpose always gives their customers a little inspiration.

“It’s not the easiest job, but it is truly rewarding because everyone’s coming in with a purpose. And that purpose is to show low. We all, as a crew, have a love for each other, and there’s so much that we try to share it with other people,” says Plaza.
