By Luc Sigaud SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – As the Syracuse University men’s basketball team prepares to take on Baylor in the first round of the 2019 NCAA tournament, local businesses are preparing for the spike in customers.
PressRoom Pub of Syracuse is relatively new to the local food scene, but seems primed to take advantage of one of the busiest sports period of the year. Beer sales increase by 20 percent during the several week tournament, and orders for food like pizza and ice cream boom, particularly for fans mourning their team’s loss. For PressRoom Pub, the national 24 percent jump in chicken wing consumption is particularly notable to chef Frank Bell, who also plays an active part in operations for the restaurant.
On top of the normal business booms like food and drink, there’s an unexpected field that blossoms during the big dance. An article from The Washington Post shed light on a growing trend of men choosing to get vasectomies during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, as it provides an excuse to stay home from work and watch the nearly constant games. At AMP Urology in Syracuse, they feel the impact of this increased demand.
Heather McGuire has is the team leader of the Syracuse office for AMP Urology and has worked there for 17 years. She says that while this time of year is busy for her office, it is not the only active period. She points to the week leading up to Thanksgiving as another time during which men are particularly inclined to get the operation done and go through the recovery process, which involves plenty of sitting on the couch.
