It’s that time of year again as the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is officially underway. NCC News’s Luc Sigaud (SEE-Goh) has more on what the big dance means to local
businesses, both expected and unexpected.

Frank Bell speaking
“Obviously the further SU goes, the bigger the crowd and the longer the crowd goes.”

Frank Bell is the head chef and a partner at Pressroom Pub on Herald Square in Syracuse. He has a pretty good idea for how people can watch March Madness.

“Play hooky. We’re doing half off chicken wings throughout the games, and running specials as usual.”

Luc Sigaud Speaking
This is Pressroom Pub’s first NCAA tournament season after opening last year so expectations are high. To be fair with double digit TVs on the walls the place is set up well for viewers. Bell believes the restaurant has a reputation for itself that it wants to uphold.

Frank Bell speaking
“We’d like to believe we’re the all around sports bar downtown.”

Standup, Luc Sigaud speaking
“Now obviously Pressroom Pub is expecting a big boost in business this March Madness season but there’s another profession that’s expecting another uptick in customers.”

Here at AMP Urology in Syracuse, they’re preparing for an increase of vasectomies. Heather McGuire says this is par for the course for weekend events.

“If they wanna do their vasectomy, they’ll choose a certain weekend that they don’t really have to do a lot of physical activity to watch the basketball games, yes.”

Luc Sigaud Speaking
Vasectomies are a bit of a social elephant in the room but McGuire’s been working in this office for 17 years. Realistically she knows that when these types of periods come along it represents a significant bump for the practice.

Heather McGuire Speaking
“I’m gonna say at least 10 percent though. I mean around holiday times we do see an elevation because then the gentlemen don’t have to, um, help.”

By Luc Sigaud SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – As the Syracuse University men’s basketball team prepares to take on Baylor in the first round of the 2019 NCAA tournament, local businesses are preparing for the spike in customers.

PressRoom Pub of Syracuse is relatively new to the local food scene, but seems primed to take advantage of one of the busiest sports period of the year. Beer sales increase by 20 percent during the several week tournament, and orders for food like pizza and ice cream boom, particularly for fans mourning their team’s loss. For PressRoom Pub, the national 24 percent jump in chicken wing consumption is particularly notable to chef Frank Bell, who also plays an active part in operations for the restaurant.

On top of the normal business booms like food and drink, there’s an unexpected field that blossoms during the big dance. An article from The Washington Post shed light on a growing trend of men choosing to get vasectomies during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, as it provides an excuse to stay home from work and watch the nearly constant games. At AMP Urology in Syracuse, they feel the impact of this increased demand.

Heather McGuire has is the team leader of the Syracuse office for AMP Urology and has worked there for 17 years. She says that while this time of year is busy for her office, it is not the only active period. She points to the week leading up to Thanksgiving as another time during which men are particularly inclined to get the operation done and go through the recovery process, which involves plenty of sitting on the couch.
