SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Dr. Suess’ The Lorax celebrates its 50th anniversary this week. This happens to occur the same week the United Nations released a report warning the public of the consequences of human-caused climate change. The Lorax, written in 1971, preaches a focus on saving and preserving the environment around us. For Syracuse native Sam Roux, the book’s overall message still holds weight today.
“Having a message about environmentalism and how we can each as individuals can make an impact will only help us moving forward, especially as we see everything that’s happened in the last few years,” Roux explained.
With arguments frequently seen across media debating what should and should not be taught to children, Roux believes that exposing children early to ideas such as environmentalism and sexuality can only help them in the future.
“We need to be informing students of this stuff, or kids of this stuff early so they can grow with that idea,” Roux said.
The Lorax still remains a popular children’s book today, ranking in the top 50 of Amazon’s best-selling children’s books.
