SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)- The booming industry of mobile sports gambling became legal in New York back in January. Gamblers all around the state can now place bets on their favorite sports and teams from their mobile devices or laptops. For sports gambler Jarred Freeman, the mobile gambling process has simplified his means of betting.
“Just the ease of being able to wake up, place a bet, sit down on your couch and watch the game makes things so much more easy, convenient and enjoyable,” Freeman said.
Freeman like many other gamblers around the state used to have to place sports bets in-person from local casinos. Now, it takes just a couple of clicks from the comfort of your own home to place bets.
Anyone living in New York or who is currently located within the state can now use the top sportsbook apps such as :
- FanDuel Sportsbook
- DraftKings Sportsbook
- Caesars Sportsbook
This new trend and betting process may still seem intimidating for new users. FanDuel employee Benjamin DiOrio says his best piece of advice for someone who is new to mobile sports gambling is to talk to others or use their “Sports Betting 101” information page on their app or website.
“Talk to people about it,” DiOrio said. This is a huge, growing space and it, it’s a big topic of conversation too, so, the more you open up to people, the more people are willing to talk about it.”
The simplified betting process starts with creating your account and verifying your location. Once that is complete, new users will be given promotional offers that vary based on the book you plan to use. To continue gambling after the promotions are used, users must deposit money into their account from their bank or card.
Once there is money in the account, users will then find the sport and the game(s) they would like to bet on.
The most common types of sports bets are:
- Over/Unders
- Moneyline
- Spreads
Over/Unders are bets that involve total points scored in a game. Money-line is picking a team to win. Spread is picking a team to win or lose by a specific amount of points.
Once you pick the bet type, put in the amount you want to wager and click the green button confirming your bet has been placed. For Freeman, this process is what he does everyday and it didn’t take long to be comfortable with it.
“Thirty minutes to an hour, I knew exactly what I was doing on the app,” Freeman said.
From people who have a wide range of knowledge on sports gambling to people who don’t know how to sports gamble, the mobile process has made sports gambling in New York a hit.
