NCC News Brief – Nov. 11, 2020 NCC Newsbrief - Nov.11

MORGAN GLICKSMAN: Good Afternoon and welcome to your NCC newsbrief, I’m Morgan Glicksman.
Onondaga County set a new record today: the county had over 200 new cases of the coronavirus in just one day. Onondaga County Executive, Ryan McMahon, blamed the outbreak on Halloween gatherings and Syracuse University students. McMahon said 66 of the new cases today came from college students in Syracuse.

Starting Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is ordering restaurants, gyms, and bars to close at 10pm in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. This is just one of several new restrictions he announced today. The Governor’s order also limits gatherings to no more than 10 people. According to the New York State Department of Health, the statewide positivity rate is now over 3%.

The Veterans day parade in New York City looked very different this year. In an effort to practice social distancing, New York City opted for a car caravan down 5th avenue instead of the annual parade. Over 100 private cars and vintage jeeps participated in the caravan to pay tribute to our veterans.

Syracuse University is moving to online learning starting tomorrow for the rest of the semester due to an increase in COVID-19 cases. The chancellor’s email to all students says that today will be the last day of in person classes for the semester. The email also says that no cases have been traced to classroom exposure and the university’s number of cases is small compared to other universities.
