Seneca Falls, N.Y. (NCC News)– High Schools across New York State are developing plans to put student athletes back on the field. However, many smaller schools are having to make big decisions on what the fall season will look like.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) released six potential scenarios for both fall and spring sports on June 30th. One of the most talked about scenarios, was to play high contact sports in the spring, making some athletes choose between two sports. Mynderse Academy High School Athletic Director, Tony Ferrara, said that small schools cannot make students choose.
“Many schools are very large. For example, they can afford to play football and lacrosse in the same season. We cannot.”
This would create conflicts for students in the areas of football, lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey. Larger schools may not have as many issues with student athletes seasons being played at the same time. But with smaller schools such as Mynderse Academy, where there are only about 400 total students, many athletes tend to participate in two or more sports.
“Schools our size, many of our football players play lacrosse and vice-versa.” Ferrara said. “Now we’re going to put them in a position to have to make a choice.”
The fall sports schedule continues to become more and more hectic every day, as the NYSPHSAA just announced today that the start of fall sports will be postponed until September 21st. The association also cancelled all New York State championships.
Right now it is not clear whether students will have to make a choice between sports. But for right now, all sports will be played.
