Darrell Cunningham – Universal Security Instruments recalled more than 180 thousand smoke detectors due to some consumers not being able to test their systems.

Darrell Cunningham -Syracuse Fire Department Captain David Ellis says you should check your detector periodically throughout the year.

David Ellis – Every time you change your clocks in the spring and in the fall when you would spring ahead and fall back for daylights savings time we recommend that folks would change the batteries in their smoke detectors at those times, just to make sure they have fresh batteries.

Darrell Cunningham – The recall affects model number M-I-3050-S manufactured from January 19, 2015 through July 11, 2016.

By Darrell Cunningham Syracuse N.Y.(NCC News) Universal Security Instruments recalled more than 180 – thousand smoke detectors due to some consumers not being able to test their systems.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says “The smoke alarms can have a misaligned internal switch causing the alarms to not activate properly, posing a risk of failure to alert consumers to a fire.”

A reliable smoke detector could be the difference between life and death.

Syracuse Fire Department Captain and Public Information Officer David Ellis says “The smoke detector will work fine, you just wont have the ability to test them on a regular basis.”

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says customers should immediately press the test button to determine if the smoke alarm is working properly. If the smoke alarm does not sound during the test, consumers should immediately contact Universal Security for a replacement.

The recall affects model numbers MI3050S and MI3050SB manufactured from January 15th, 2015 through July 11th, 2016.

A smoke detector can only save lives if it’s working.
