Sandy Creek Principal Replaced After Comments Made On Facebook Sandy Creek Principal Replaced After Comments Made On Facebook

A new Sandy Creek High School Principal has been appointed. Yesterday, the Sandy Creek Superintendent announced that retired high school principal Maureen Shiel will serve as interim principal replacing Emily Wemmer.

The replacement comes after comments Wemmer made on facebook that upset some parents who found them disrespectful to the community.

Various of Wemmer’s posts dealt with feelings she had on the treatment of women in the district. Some parents saw nothing wrong with her posts while others saw them to be offensive to the community  She later apologized for her comments in a statement posted on the district’s website.

“It was never my intention to speak badly of this community, which has welcomed me with open arms. In context, my meaning was that I feel a need to empower my female students in what is, in many respects, a traditional and conservative culture. I allowed my personal political beliefs to overshadow that message, which ultimately is that I care deeply for the welfare and success of Sandy Creek students,” said Wemmer.

The full statement by Emily Wemmer on the district’s website can be read below:

To the Board of Education and the Sandy Creek Community:

In the past few days, comments taken from my personal Facebook page have been shared publicly and have been interpreted as disparaging the Sandy Creek community. I would like to offer my sincere apology to anyone who may have felt that my statements were disrespectful. It was never my intention to speak badly of this community, which has welcomed me with open arms. In context, my meaning was that I feel a need to empower my female students in what is, in many respects, a traditional and conservative culture. I allowed my personal political beliefs to overshadow that message, which ultimately is that I care deeply for the welfare and success of Sandy Creek students.

Recently I experienced a security breach in several of my private online accounts. In addition to having my debit card number stolen, and other information used in an attempt to divert my direct-deposit paycheck to another bank account, my Facebook privacy settings were compromised. Conversations with friends and family who have no connection to Sandy Creek, conversations which were always intended to be private, became available publicly to anyone who chose to search the internet for my name. I have since deleted all of my social media accounts and have learned a valuable lesson about identity theft in the digital world. I would encourage anyone else who is active on social media to visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website for tips on “Privacy, Identity, and Online Security” at www.consumer.ftc.gov.

It is still unclear what Wemmer’s current status with Oswego County School District is.
