Southwest has arrived at Syracuse Hancock International Airport with their first-ever regularly scheduled flights. This includes three flights a day to Baltimore and flights to Orlando on Saturday.
“I haven’t been flying Southwest because they haven’t had a direct flight”, Florida resident Mary Walker said. Although she couldn’t fly Southwest home today, she’s excited to in the near future.
Southwest said their team started working this Sunday and created the schedule as it stands now to match the staffing they have at this time. Southwest is set to hire 5,000 employees by the end of the year to aid in its operations.
“It’s been my experience,” Syracuse Resident Mike Marrotte said, “that wherever Southwest goes they bring new people here and now it will allow people who couldn’t afford to fly to fly”
With the holidays right around the corner, airline workers said that Southwest will lessen the congestion of the airport and create more options for flyers. “People are going to have more choices and people like choices,” Walker said. With their first flight to Florida set for this Saturday, Nov. 20, Walker may be flying to Syracuse on a Southwest jet sooner than she knows.
