Reporter: One Syracuse resident used to have one.

Syracuse Resident: “No cause I don’t go so far when I used to travel farther distances like on the highway and stuff on and make sure I had a shovel and blanket, food, water”

Reporter:But one Triple A worker says that it can happen as close as your parking lot.

Christopher Delia: “if your battery is down to the last layer of its wear and you didn’t get it tested and it’s near the end of its life and we get into the subzero weather and you go out to start your car at your place of work and its now closed and locked and it doesn’t start that’s where the jumper cables come in at least you can stop somebody and try to get a jump start. It’s just an added layer of protection”

Reporter: Not having an emergency kit in your car this winter could result in life for death.

The national weather service says if temperatures are below freezing with mild winds it can take minutes for someone to get frostbite.

Christopher Delia: “Sometimes when we have a bad storm it can take a long time for even triple A to get to you just because of the amount of people stuck so you really need to make sure you got a hat and gloves and boots and wool blankets they’re the best ya know things like that in your car.”

Reporter:The kit includes a first aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight, cloths, screw drivers, duct tape.
Delia says that it’s not that people don’t have to have them but they don’t realize they need them.

Chris Delia “I know when I mention it to my family and friends a majority of them don’t have them. They’ll see me with it like oooh what’s that”

SYRACUSE N.Y. (NCC News)–This morning winter weather knocked on Syracuse’s back door. Freezing temperatures, snow, wind, and icy roads.

In 2017 AAA reported that four in ten people were ready for an emergency if they faced one on the road.

If your car battery dies during the winter AAA recommends you keep a kit in your car to stay safe while you wait for help.

“Sometimes when we have a bad storm it can take a long time for even AAA to get to you. Just because of the amount of people stuck,” Christopher Delia said.

The AAA sales associate says that you don’t even have to be driving far to run into trouble.

“It is subzero weather and you go out to start your car at your place of work and its now closed and locked and it doesn’t start. That’s where the jumper cables come in at least you can stop somebody and try to get a jump start. It’s just an added layer of protection,” Delia said.

Some of the items in the kit include:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Jumper Cables
  • Flashlight
  • Cloths
  • Screwdriver
  • Duct Tape

Since working at AAA Delia knows the consequences of not having a kit but says some friends don’t realize the difference it can make.

“I know when I mention it to my family and friends a majority of them don’t have them. They’ll see me with it like oh what’s that,” Delia said.
