SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) –  Syracuse senior Russel Fearon received a $50,000 cash prize Oct. 17. Fearon created Sugex, a wearable device that helps people manage diabetes.

Fearon has been working on this project the entire summer.  His experiences as a diabetic prompted him to do this.

“Winning that prize recognizes and validates what we’ve been doing,” he said. “This says it’s actually worth it and we believe in it.”

Fearon is looking to change peoples lives across the nation with Sugex, but the first step is keeping the product safe.

“I plan to go to my advisors and hire attorneys because I’ve been getting contacted by investors,” he said. “I don’t plan on handing the money over just to anyone.”

With all the attention surrounding Sugex, Fearon is looking for software developers, IT people, chemical engineers, biomedical engineers, and others.

“The hardest part about this is being in school,” he said. “And while it’s a great thing , it’s also difficult because of [the] time aspect of it.”

Fearon doesn’t have one set plan but he does have a list of things he wants to get done to enhance Sugex, which involves accuracy so it can be dependable for users.

The senior plans to make Sugex more accurate by enhancing the glucometer so that it can draw blood, collect it, and calculate it efficiently.
