Syracuse Students Have Reservations About COVID-19 Vaccine Syracuse Students Have Reservations About the Covid-19 Vaccine

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Pharmaceutical company Pfizer and biotechnology company Moderna have released data for the COVID-19 vaccines that they have been testing. Pfizer has reported that its vaccine is 95% effective while Moderna says its vaccine is 94.5% effective.

According to The Associated Press, medical professionals such as Dr. Anthony Faucci have said these results are “truly sticking.” However, there are some people who aren’t as thrilled about the possibility of receiving this shot.

I don’t want to be like a guinea pig I guess,” said Jillian Arroyo-Mark, a junior at Syracuse University.

SU student Jocelyn Lindsay also has reservations about the vaccine.

I am skeptical. I don’t know if I would want to be in the first round of vaccines,” said Lindsay.

Dr. Electra Bradshaw-Graham, a physician at Prisma Health, said it is reasonable for people to not want this vaccine anytime soon. Although she trusts the research involved in the making of the vaccine, she still has some apprehensions.

It usually takes up to 8 months to formulate any other vaccine so the fact that this vaccine only took maybe 10 months and it’s already been produced and ready for distribution is a little concerning,” she said.

Although Bradshaw-Graham has these concerns, she said she will get this vaccine once testing is complete and more research has been conducted.

“When the vaccine is ready for the general public, I will get the vaccine and so will my immediate family,” she said. “I want to see more numbers and more possible side effects and for that, I would wait a little before taking the vaccine.”

U.S. officials said they hope to have 20 million doses of the vaccine from both Pfizer and Moderna by late December.
