Veterans Day 2020: How COVID has Affected Tradition Veterans Day 2020: How COVID has Affected Tradition

A few different traditions have been altered as a result of COVID-19

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Amid the ongoing COVID pandemic, this year’s Veteran Day’s will look a little different in Central New York. Multiple Veterans Day traditions have had to adapt to fit limitations brought on by COVID.

The annual American flag display outside Wegman’s in Clay is one tradition that is slightly different.

Every year since 2013, the Onondaga North Rotary Club sells American flags to display in honor of veterans and fire responders, but this year has been expanded to include essential workers. This year the display includes nearly 600 American flags.

All over New York this year Veteran’s Day will be “Free Fishing Day.” Both residents and non-residents can fish with no fishing license required.

The CNY Veterans Parade and Expo was also affected by the pandemic. Instead of the typical parade, the CNY Veterans Parade produced a short ceremony that honored the veterans in the community and live-streamed it onto their Facebook page.

Also, there are plenty of local deals that help honor veterans. On Veterans Day, Chilis, Red Robin and Applebee’s are offering a free meal to all veterans and active military members. Dunkin’ Donuts is giving away a free donut and Starbucks is giving away tall hot coffees to veterans, military members and their spouses.
