SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Central New York is home to thousands of those who’ve served in the United States military, and on Veterans Day, there was no shortage of celebrations for the vets.
Ceremonies started this past Saturday with the Central New York Veterans Parade and Expo at the New York State Fairgrounds.
Veterans Day presented a wide array of opportunities to celebrate on Monday. From a Ceremony at Hendricks Chapel, to free dental care opportunities for vets at Eastwood Dental in Solvay. Not to mention, a Veterans Day Social in Chittenango.
Later on in the evening, there was a Veterans Day celebration from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00p.m. at Red Hawk Brewing LTD, and a Veterans Day auction from 4:00 pm. – 9:00 p.m. at Crossroads Auction Center in Central Square.
LILIA: Now, that’s all that’s happening on the hill, but Jack McMullen is back in studio to tell us about how the rest of Central New York is celebrating Veterans Day.
JACK: Lilia thanks a ton. As we know, Syracuse University is a top-flight private school for veterans. But New York State is home to over 800,000 veterans of the U.S. military. Let’s examine how Central New York celebrated the service of all of our vets.
The festivities started this weekend as the New York State Fairgrounds and Expo Center hosted the Central New York Veterans parade on Saturday. Celebrations at the fairgrounds continued in a smaller capacity this afternoon, but why don’t we move to today.
Earlier this morning, the Veterans Day Fun Run kicked off before 7:00 a.m., a nice start to the day on the hill. Then the ceremony at Hendricks Chapel that we just heard from Lilia about, followed by a letter-writing activity at Bird Library. The event at Bird gives anybody and everybody a chance to stop by and craft a letter to a vet, whether be in the family, a friend, however they may be related. The table will be open to the public until 5:00 p.m. tonight, so just a little bit more time to get there.
Elsewhere in Central New York, Eastwood Dental Center in Syracuse offered free dental care to any veterans, there was a memorial mass at Saint Marianne Cope Perish in Solvay, and a social gathering in Chittenango.
And what you can still take part in, the Spaghetti Warehouse, they have a Veterans Day special. Customers can capitalize on the two for 25 deal. They can get a shareable app plus any two entrees for 25 dollars. Along with that there’s a Veterans Day celebration today at Red Hawk Brewing. You could capitalize on your kids’ day off from school with a discounted laser tag pass, and there’s a Veterans Day auction running all evening long in Central Square. Understandably, a busy day honoring the vets in CNY, guys.
