Volunteers Fuel Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser Volunteers Fuel Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser

The charity hopes the "Christmas in July" event will re-stock their supplies.

Anchor: The holiday season prompts many people to give back to their community. But, as N-C-C’s Maria Trivelpiece reports, one local charity is asking for help a little bit earlier this year.

Trivelpiece: The Ronald McDonald House of Central New York is hosting their “Christmas in July” fundraiser next Thursday. The charity uses this event to re-stock their food pantries that begin to run low on items during this time of year. Because of its magnitude, volunteer manager, Emily Whalen, says extra help is crucial.

Whalen: We only have a handful of full time staff members so we rely on volunteers.

Trivelpiece: The families are not the only ones that benefit. Those helping out gain something from the experience as well.

Whalen: When the volunteers see a family or see a sick child, um, it really makes them feel like they’re doing something good and they’re giving back.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – Santa Claus is not coming to town next Thursday, but it seems as though he is sending some helpers to the Ronald McDonald House of Central New York. On July 25th, volunteers will be collecting donations for the charity’s annual “Christmas in July” event.

“They will organize the donations that are brought in,”  said volunteer manager, Emily Whalen.

Those helping out come from all across the community and take care of a multitude of jobs.

“A kickboxing group volunteered to come in and help decorate,” said Whalen. “They are also going to bake Christmas cookies.”

The event was created to replenish the house’s pantry supply and shelves during the summer months when the amount of items runs low. Fundraising and development associate, Catherine Cross, said that it is a great way to get the community involved in charitable activities in the summer months.

Unlike their other fundraisers, “Christmas in July” will give people the opportunity to donate products and physical items instead of just monetary sums.

“Every year we put out a wish list,” said Cross.

The items vary depending on the need. This year they asked for coffee, cooking spray, and a few other essentials. The magnitude of the event and the number of donations will require much help.

“It’s really huge for us,” Whalen said. “We have about 15 to 20 volunteers throughout the day who will help with different tasks.”

Members of the community can drop off items between nine am and six pm on July 25th at the Ronald McDonald House of Central New York’s location on E. Genesee St.
