Richard Maj: I’m Richard Maj reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today, April 18th.
Central New York businessman Adam Weitsman has been bringing celebrities to the Dome all year and has been a huge financial backer of the program. Last week, he announced that he will stop his involvement with SU athletics. SU sport management professor Dennis Deninger says the program’s reliance on Weitsman is a major issue.
Dennis Deninger: I’m not so sure one individual making pronouncements and acting on his own is beneficial for the university… it isn’t through the channel that the athletic department has control over or say over or protection of athletes involved.
RM: Weitsman says the reason for this change is issues with the chancellor.
The Syracuse Police Department is taking steps to get guns off of the streets. They will be holding a gun buy back in partnership with the New York State Attorney General’s Office. They will accept working or non-working unloaded guns, with those participating earning up to five hundred dollars. S-P-D Lieutenant Matthew Malinowski says the aim of the event is not to charge people with crimes, but to make the city safer.
Matthew Malinowski: Most people don’t trust that you can purely turn in a gun and not have your name taken down or get in trouble but it is a true amnesty program, there is no information taken.
RM: The program is on Saturday, April 29th at St. Lucy’s Food Pantry on Gifford Street from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
It’s getting cooler in Central New York with highs today in the upper 40s, but warming up by the end of the week with temperatures in the 70s over the weekend.
