I’m Maria Trivelpiece reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today for May 29th. New York State was set to begin Phase Two today, but Governor Andrew Cuomo put a halt to the movement, leaving some local leaders, like Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente angry and frustrated.

Picente: The lack of communication by the Chief Executive of the State to local governments directly, has been very difficult to deal with and is he goes up there each and every day and then speaks about the different things that then we have to react to and deal with and make it hard for us to do not just our job but what we have to do regarding this crisis which has started many months ago.

COVID-19 has also forced schools to close, making the jobs of teachers and social workers much tougher. And according to social worker Jessica Hill, with the extended time students are home, more problems are occurring.

Jessica Hill: So abuse, I feel has definitely heightened in this time because they’re not used to having all of this attention and not knowing how to handle the issues that we typically put off on teachers. So I think abuse, neglect, all of those things are definitely more heightened in this moment because of the unpreparedness.

The Minnesota riots continue today and we will have the updates for you.

And in sports, golf fans are hopeful for a return to some normalcy, but yesterday the PGA Tour announced that the John Deere Classic is cancelled due to restrictions in the area. But Nascar continues with its socially distanced races. Yesterday Chase Elliot won the Alsco Uniforms 500. Scarlett Lisjack will have this and more later on.

And Michelle Knezovic tells us what weather we can expect for today.

Michelle Knezovic: Now in Central New York if you look out your door you’ll see some overcast skies and it is reaching about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but could get up to almost 86 degrees today. The humidity is very high reaching 70 percent. And, this afternoon there is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms.
