WILL HENTSCHEL: I’m Will Hentschel reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today, Nov. 5.

New Yorkers are in their first week of a new seatbelt law. The law requires all passengers, regardless of age, to wear their seatbelts in the backseat of cars. Chris Sifre thinks people should always buckle up for their own safety.

CHRIS SIFRE: People just think they’re like bigger than the law and that they’re like almost invincible and won’t get hurt. But they really should in my opinion because it could really help them out. You never know what’s going to happen.

HENTSCHEL: The 2021 Onondaga county budget is currently being reviewed by county legislatures. County executive Ryan McMahon says the county is struggling after COVID hampered the local sales tax.

RYAN MCMAHON: Our sales tax revenue, even though it is improving in the third quarter, and now we are going into the fourth quarter, uh is still off over ya know 30-million dollars.

HENTSCHEL: SUNY Cortland has extended their online learning to the remainder of the semester, and has introduced mandatory testing before students can return home. Cortland student Bobby Jackson actually tested positive for the virus and is now grateful to his school.

BOBBY JACKSON: I’m really glad the school made sure that we tested everybody. That way I wouldn’t go home and expose, you know, family, friends, and loved ones back at home to the virus.

HENTSCHEL: Syracuse University will also require their students to test negative before they go home for break.

Unseasonably warm weather coming up as temperatures for the next couple of days could stretch into the 70s. Usually, temps around this time of year are in the low 50s, according to the National Weather Service, so be sure to enjoy it while it lasts.
