I’m Brianna Yates reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today, October sixteenth.

Central New York hospitals are taking measures to lower the number of flu cases this year. Upstate Medical University’s Jarrod Bagatell(BAG-uh-tell) says Central New York will be introduced to Flu Crews this year -groups of volunteers who will offer flu vaccinations on weekends and evening hours so the vaccination is more accessible and convenient.

Bagatell: “Not only are we better able to provide the vaccines to our many employees and students; we’re also getting better at collecting the data.”

There’s growing momentum and resources available to young women interested in entering the STEM field. Syracuse University wrapped up the eighth annual “It Girls Overnight Retreat”, a program for high school girls interested in joining the STEM Field.

Lisa Pugh: “I think the event was specifically aimed to achieve the goal of making these girls feel like they have the voice and the power to continue following their dreams.”

The recent string of violence in Onondaga County has led to questions about available resources. The county’s Appointed Special Advocates Program offers help for children in potentially violent homes.
