National Grid Plans to Heat Onondaga County Aquarium With Unique Source National Grid Plans to Heat Onondaga County Aquarium With Unique Source

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – National Grid may be looking to heat and cool the new Onondaga County Aquarium through a unique source — with waste water from a nearby sewage plant.

National Grid announced plans to take heat sent down the drain by showers, dishwashers, washing machines and other sources to provide hot water to the aquarium.

If it pulls it off, National Grid will become the first utility company to use waste water as a renewable energy source.

This $113 million project would also help bring comfort to visitors of the aquarium by providing heating and cooling.

The aquarium is projected to open in 2025.

National Grid and city officials were not available for comment on the plan.
