SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — A school shooting on the campus of Michigan State University left three students dead last night. Syracuse University students expressed their worries about the possibility of an active shooter being present on campus.
“I feel like in our country it’s just so normalized. I also feel like there’s not as much security going in and out of buildings,” says Katharine Waige, an undergraduate Student at SU. “I know my friends and smaller private colleges have scan codes on all of the doors and everything.”
While there is fear apparent amongst the university, some students feel that the Department of Public Safety does a consistent job to ensure students’ safety and keeping them aware of potential threats on campus.
” DPS, is really transparent with us,” says Chris Buerly, another undergraduate student at SU. “they send us monthly updates and they always send out a school wide email whenever there is possible shots fired and stuff like that.”
Since the shooting in East Lansing yesterday evening, Michigan State University has canceled all school activities for the next 48 hours.
The suspected perpetrator has been identified as 43 year-old Anthony McCrae. Following the shooting, McCrae was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. McCrae’s motive is still unknown.
Syracuse University has yet to release a statement on the shooting at Michigan State.
