How Students Pass Time While Distance Learning Passing Time When Being Distanced Learning

Many students have struggled to stay productive after classes got moved online

Sigworth: Stuck at home, students have had to get creative with how they pass the time. Many have gone back to simple activities while others have found new ways to have fun.

Noone: Doing sort of hands-on activities apart from being on your screens, for instance, mini-golf. Turn your apartment into a mini-golf course, it’s really fun and it’s something to do.

Sigworth: The lack of real classes to attend has left many students struggling to stay focused.

Harkins: It’s just tough when there’s so many other things you could be doing and its not like you’re really being held responsible for anything you do during class. You can’t get yelled at by your teacher if you’re in your room.

Sigworth: While people are bunkered down at home, Noone offered some advice on how to stay fresh and productive.

Noone: Putting things just in between doing work, like little small activities that are sort of useless but get you to sort of engage your brain and body really helps get through it

Sigworth: With no real estimate for how long the quarantine will last, maybe every home should find their version of mini-golf. Tate Sigworth, N-C-C News.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – During the first week of online classes, many Syracuse students are struggling to stay focused while taking classes from home.

With the spread of the Coronavirus across the country, many colleges have adopted a “distanced learning” model where all classes are held online. For Caroline Noone, a SU student, the only downside to this model is the struggle to stay focused while working from home.

“The most difficult part of it is not having a schedule and typical school routine so that’s it’s a lot difficult to be motived to do work,” Noone said.

Since classes were moved online, students have had to find new ways to spend their new free time.

“The motivation and the focus is at an all-time low,” Kevin Harkins said. “I find myself not focusing as much as I would in person as I do online.”

While not in class, many students spend a lot of their time sitting on their couch, staring at their TV.

“In between meditation sessions I’ve been playing some video games, just hanging out, watching a lot of old sporting events, because there’s not really any new ones. Times been tough.” Harkins said.

Staying inside for long periods of time can wear on the mind and make you less productive. But Noone thinks by doing small tasks to engage the mind can help keep your mind sharp.

“Putting things just in between doing work, like little small activities that are sort of useless but get you to sort of engage your brain and body really helps get through it,” Noone said.
