New York Adds New Highway Equipment New York Adds New Highway Equipment

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – New equipment was added onto New York highways. The New York State Department of Transportation and Thruway Authority started the idea to enforce the law and National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The new equipment includes cameras and radars to detect speeding. The new radar system connects to cameras to take images of the speeding vehicle including its time, location, lane, and more.

New York State will not run this new program because they signed a contract with Verra Mobility. Verra Mobility will work with state police to catch speeders.

This week, state police are disguised as maintenance workers until this Friday in honor of National Work Zone Awareness Week. Police will try to catch drivers who disobey the Move Over Law, workers with flags, or the speed limit on the highway.

Hochul created a new traffic law in 2021 that will have a strict tolerance for speeding. The 2021 law includes warnings, fines, and possible license suspension.

The 2021 law from Governor Hochul is drivers will get warned for speeding for the first 30 days. Once the 30 days are up, fines will be handed out and will increase for continued speeding violations.

State and out-of-state residents will receive mail about the violation in a certain amount of days depending on where they live. If drivers don’t pay the violation fee, they could have trouble renewing their license and registration but could fight the violation.

The new camera and radar program started this Monday and will continue to be used.
