Stop the waste! Stop the waste!

SU student proves: Waste-free living is not as impossible as it seems!

Every day we discard a million tons of waste. But after we tossed it in the trash, it doesn’t disappear. It ends up on waste disposal sites or, even worse, in oceans and the nature. Our environment suffers under our consumption-oriented lifestyle.

This wastage is one of the reasons why Syracuse University student Laura Markley started her organization “waste-free Ph.D.”. With her instagram presence and website she wants to raise awareness and share her own experience of reducing waste in her daily life. This should lead to a healthy understanding of waste-free living.

Laura Markley studies at the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at Syracuse University. She did her bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in Environmental Earth Science. So she is an expert when it comes to environmental topics.

Julia Mahl: TO AVOID PRODUCING WASTE CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT IN OUR DAILY LIFE.
BUT LAURA MARKLEY TRIES TO FACE THIS CHALLENGE WITH HER SELF-FUNDED ORGANIZATION “WASTEFREE PHD”.
SHE WANTS TO RAISE AWARENESS THAT EVERYBODYS CONSUMPTION HABITS HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE EARTH.

Laura Markley: “So, I’m always trying to support something like that’s local and also a company that’s trying to be more sustainable. Staying away from things like fast fashion and trying to buy more second-hand when I can. So, mostly just being more aware of the waste I’m creating even if I’m sometimes I do have to buy something that creates waste.”

Julia Mahl: SOME PEOPLE LIKELY FEEL ATTACKED IF SOMEONE CRITIZES THEM AND DEMANDS CHANGE.
THAT’S WHY MARKLEY TRIES TO REACH HER AUDIENCE WITH SUGGESTONS INSTEAD OF PRESSURE.

Laura Markley: “As you run out of things, to think ‘Oh I’m out of shampoo, what can I choose now that’s from a better company or will produce less waste in the long run. So just doing like simple small changes over time.”

Julia Mahl: AS MARKLEY EMPHASIZES, IT’S NOT ABOUT ALL OR NOTHING. EVERBODY CAN JUST DO AS MUCH AS IT FITS THEIR LIFESTYLE.
